Lancers Remain Undefeated in Conference Play, Claiming Five Set Thriller over Falcons

Worcester, MA- After a hard fought match last night, the Worcester State Volleyball team (5-14, 1-0) jumps right back into action tonight as they head to Fitchburg State to take on the Falcons in their second conference game of the season. Colonis, who is now just six digs away from her career 1000th, aims to cross the threshold tonight as she helps to push her team to their second conference victory.

Final

Worcester State: 3

Fitchburg State: 2

How it Happened:

The night started off hot for the Lancers as they jumped to an early 10-3 lead on the Hawks. The run was led by two stellar performances from juniors Cassidy D'Esposito (Milford, NY) with four kills and Kaitlyn Cueva (Tewksbury, MA) with three kills. Fitchburg State did have a run of their own as they were fighting to get back into the match. They were able to get five scores in a row which would get them back to within seven. However, The Blue and Gold would quickly silence those glimmers of hope with a five point run of their own to close out the set.

The second set started out tight as Fitchburg State and the Lancers went point for point as they were both looking for an edge. With the score tied up at 8-8 the Lancers would go on a five point run giving them a solid but not yet comfortable lead. The Hawks would respond with a three point run of their own to get them back to within striking distance. From then on they continued to go back and forth until Fitchburg State was able to lay the final blow in the set as they captured their first win of the night.

The Lancers started out the third set with an authoritative seven point run to start the match, and set the tone. However, The Hawks were able to match their play with a four point run of their own to keep it close. Worcester State was able to close out the set with a commanding seven point lead to give them their second win of the night. Junior Kate Stedronsky (Sea Girt, NJ) had a great set with four kills to lead the Lancers to a big third set win.

The Blue and Gold started off the fourth set slowly as the Hawks took a 7-1 lead to start the set. Worcester  was able to get back to within four with help again from Stedronsky. Despite the offensive efforts made by Worcester State the Hawks were determined to take this set as they won this set by a comfortable five point margin.

The fifth and final set would put both teams on the quest for the 15 points needed to claim the conference victory. Worcester would leap to a quick five point lead that was then solidified with the final 15 with a kill from first year Kaitlyn Anthony (Gastonia, NC) off an assist from Colonis who also reached her 1,000th career dig in the match, claiming 15 in the match.

First year Katherine Crateau (North Andover, MA) would claim the night with 39 digs while Stedronsky would end the night with 13 kills and four total blocks.
