Pigeon, Jasmin Lead Baseball to 19-8 Win Over Manhattanville

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior catcher Mathew Pigeon (Canton, Mass.) belted a pair of home runs and freshman right fielder Dan Jasmin (East Meadow, N.Y.) homered, tripled, and drove in six runs to lead the Bridgewater State University baseball team to a 19-8 victory over Manhattanville College on Tuesday morning at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

The Bears improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Valiants fall to 3-2.

Bridgewater pounded out 21 hits in the contest including seven for extra bases (three doubles, a triple, three home runs).

Pigeon went 4-for-5 with the two home runs, a double four runs and four RBI as he was one of three Bears to record four hits in the contest. Pigeon smacked his first collegiate home run, a solo blast over the right field fence, to lead off the top of the seventh inning. He added a three-run blast to right to cap off an eight-run eighth inning. Pigeon also doubled and scored during a three-run fourth inning as the Bears broke a 1-1 tie.

Bridgewater sent 11 batters to plate in the eighth. Pigeon, in fact, led off the frame with a base hit and scored on a bases clearing three-run triple by Jasmin.

Jasmin finished 3-for-5 at the plate. He smacked his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot over the right field fence, to extend the BSU lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the seventh. Jasmin also singled and walked as he was a double shy of hitting for the cycle.

Sophomore second baseman Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) and junior shortstop Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) also registered four hits for the Bears. Emerson went 4-for-5 with a walk, a pair of stolen bases, four runs scored and two RBI. Lindsay was 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, stolen base, three runs and an RBI.

Freshman Riley Thornell (Wareham, Mass.) also finished with multiple hits for Bridgewater State. Thornell reached safely four times as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and three RBI.

Sophomore lefthander Shane Handrahan (Raynham, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound for the Bears as he tossed five solid innings. Handrahan (1-0) allowed one unearned run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Senior closer Tyler Dasilva-Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) came on the with the bases loaded and the Bears clinging to an 11-7 lead with two out in the top of the eighth. After giving up an RBI infield single, Dasilva-Medeiros got out of the jam with a harmless fly out and then retired the side in the ninth to record his first save of the season and 12th of his career.

Sophomore right fielder Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored to pace the Manhattanville offense.

Six Manhattanville pitchers were tagged for 19 runs (16 earned) on 21 hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts. The Valiants also hit three batters.

Bridgewater State's trip to Myrtle Beach continues on Wednesday afternoon as the Bears take on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at four o'clock.
