Baseball Posts 14-2 Win Over Curry, Emerson Notches 200th Career Hit

MILTON, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University baseball team cruised to a 14-2 victory over Curry College on Thursday afternoon at the Jack Vallely Baseball Diamond.

The Bears, who scored all their runs over the first five innings, improve to 8-6 on the season with their sixth straight win while the Colonels fall to 5-8.

Senior Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) went 3-for-7 out of the leadoff spot and scored a run. Emerson's single in the fifth inning marked the 200th hit of his outstanding career. He joins BSU Hall of Famer's Ed Grueter (1988-91) and Steve Smith (2005-08) in the 200-hit club.

Curry pitching gave up 11 hits, issued 13 walks and hit two batters.

The Bears scored all the runs they would need with a six-run top of the first inning. Bridgewater sent 12 batters to the plate in frame and capitalized on a pair of Colonel errors.

Junior Joshua Selander (Granby, Conn.) paced the BSU offense as he went 4-for-5 with a double, a walk, two runs and two RBI. Selander connected for an RBI single and scored a run in the six-run first. He also knocked in a run with a base hit in the fourth.

Senior DJ Prampin (Worcester, Mass.) went 1-for-3 with a home run and a sacrifice fly as he drove in four runs on the afternoon. Prampin, who has four home runs in the last four games, belted a two-run blast to right-center to cap off the scoring for the Bears in the fifth inning. He brought in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and was hit by a pitch with the base loaded in the third.

Senior Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) returned to the BSU lineup and finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI before being replaced later in the game.  Lindsay connected for RBI singles in each of the first two innings.

Sophomore Jaden Arruda (Seekonk, Mass.) worked the first five inning on the mound for the Bears to pick up his first win of the season. Arruda (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Senior Tommy Marshall (Hanson, Mass.) connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning for the only runs of the game for Curry.

Junior Blake Samuelson (Millbury, Mass.), senior Nathan Labonte (Raynham, Mass.) and sophomore Maxwell Morotti (Westport, Mass.) combined for four scoreless innings of relief for the Bears. Samuelson fanned three in two innings of work.

Junior Reegan Thomas (Standish, Maine) was saddled with the loss for the Colonels. Thomas gave up nine runs on five hits with four walks a pair of strikeouts in just 1 1/3 innings. Seven of the nine runs were unearned.

The Bears open MASCAC play on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Framingham State University. Game one of the twinbill will get underway at one o'clock.

Notes: Emerson also surpassed Steve Smith for the Bears all-time lead in career at bats. Emerson now has 559 at bats in his career while Smith totaled 555 from 2005 to 2008.
