Lancers Sink Owls, Remain Unbeaten in MASCAC Play

Worcester, MA- On Saturday afternoon, the Worcester State Men's Basketball team was back in action to take on Westfield State in a home MASCAC action. The Lancers defeated the Owls by a score of 81-64 to remain unbeaten in MASCAC play.

 

During the game's first four minutes, both teams traded baskets that resulted in an 8-8 score. Worcester State was able to go on a quick 7-1 scoring run to lead 15-9 with over twelve minutes remaining on the game clock. Westfield State responded with a quick 7-0 scoring run of their own to take a one-point lead halfway through the half. Even though both teams struggled shooting the ball, the Owls found a way to execute a few more plays on the offensive end to go into halftime leading 29-25. The one bright spot for the Lancers during the first half was Aaron Nkrumah (Worcester, Mass.), who was 4-8 from the field and the game's leading scorer at the half with nine points.

 

Worcester State started the second half on a quick 7-0 run to take a three-point lead. Over the next few minutes, both teams exchanged the lead multiple times. Zion Hendrix (Charlotte, N.C.) found his offensive stroke in the second half that pushed the Lancer's lead to seven with over ten minutes remaining in regulation. Nkrumah continued his stellar offensive play from the first half for Worcester State hitting two clutch three-point shots that helped his team obtain the first double-digit lead of the game. Sam Dion (Barre, Mass.) put the game on ice when he hit two straight three-point shots that pushed the Lancer's lead to 16 with over five minutes to play. The Lancers pushed their winning streak in conference play to three games with an 83-60 victory over the Owls.

 

Nkrumah was the game's leading scorer with 23 points. Worcester State held Westfield State to a total field goal percentage of 30.4% on the defensive end of the court.




Worcester State (11-5, 3-0) is back in action on January 18 when they go on the road to take on Fitchburg State in another MASCAC matchup with tip-off at 5:00. Westfield State (3-12, 2-2) will be back on the court January 18 when they remain on the road to compete against Bridgewater State with tip-off at 5:30.
