Worcester, MA- After a conference season opening win on Saturday, and 30 points from senior Katie Hurynowicz, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (6-7, 1-0), look to grab another win, alongside Hurynowicz 1,000th career point, with a win over Mount Holyoke.
Final
Worcester State: 58
Mount Holyoke: 34
How it Happened:
The opening half of action was a complete back and forth team between each squad as the Lyons would open the scoring looking to extend their win streak to five, but the Lancers would then claim the lead off a sophomore Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) to get the scoring started for Worcester. Mount Holyoke would tie up the action and take the lead half way through the first but with just under four minutes to go, Hurynowicz would hit her two free throws to record her 1,000th career point and retake the lead for Worcester. The game would continue to stay a lead change and tie game well into the second when the Lancers went on a late surge started by a senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) free throw and lay up set and a Hurynowicz three to claim a six point advantage. Worcester would hold onto the lead into the break with a 22-18 lead.
The start of the second half would at first blush appeared to be a basket a team situation but within the first two minutes the Lancers had turned on their offensive talents grabbing 22 points to the Lyons 8 in the third grabbing an 18 point lead they aimed to hold on the final quarter of regulation. The fourth quarter would see Mount Holyoke amp up the pressure on the Lancers but Worcester still managed to find the gaps and the basket to maintain their double digit lead for the remainder of the action. Worcester would make it a full team win as each uniformed player got in on the action tonight with the Lancer bench providing 22 points towards the 58-34 win.
Hurynowicz and St. Martin would each end the day with 11 points, while St. MArtin would also grab eight boards.
