How it Happened:
The Vikings would jump out to a quick lead at 6-2 but Worcester would bring the game back to within one in the opening quarter of a sophomore Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) jump shot. Another offensive run would expand the Vikings lead to 10 before senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) would go on a minor offensive roll to bring the game within six and after some back and forth in the first, Worcester would end down just six into the second. The second quarter found sophomore Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) going deep and cutting the lead to just three as the Lancers started their push to gain ground in the second. Although having solid defense and some big attacking moments, the Vikings would hold off the gain and head into the halftime break with a 37-27 lead. Sophomore Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) led the Lancers at the half in scoring, shooting 100% from the three-point line.
The second half opened with the Vikings going on an 8-0 run and the Lancers were forced to call their first timeout of the half to reset their defense. After the timeout, senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) would take a charging foul and start to gain momentum for the Lancers. Sophomore Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would get the scoring started for Worcester that would fuel a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 4 points by the final minute of the third. The final quarter would start with Lomonaco getting the action started for the Lancers. The opening minutes of the quarter would be a series of back-and-forth scoring drives. The Vikings would pull ahead by as much as 12 points with around 3:45 to go on a late surge forcing the Lancers to buckle down on defense. As the game winded down the Vikings would go on a 5-4 run to close out the game and claim the 69-56 victory.
