BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Wheaton College field hockey team posted a 5-0 shutout victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Lyons improve to 3-12 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-14.

Senior midfielder Elizabeth Helmreich (Sanford, Maine) scored off a penalty corner 2:16 into the first quarter to give the Lyons the early 1-0 lead. Helmreich collected the ball outside the circle, beat two defenders and ripped a shot into the right side of the cage.

Helmreich found the back of the net again off a penalty corner to extend the Wheaton advantage to 2-0 early in the second quarter. Off a pass from senior forward Karin Dion (Cumberland, R.I.), Helmreich blasted a shot inside the left post from just inside the circle for her third goal of the year.

Dion made it a 3-0 game midway through the second period. Stationed in front of the net, Dion tipped home a long-range shot by senior midfielder Lauren Bartlett (Middlebury, Vt.) for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Sophomore forward Ellie Williams (Wilbraham, Mass.) deflected home a backhand shot by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Janeczek (Glastonbury, Conn.) 5:10 into the third period to give the Lyons a 4-0 lead. For Williams, the strike marked her second of the year.

Freshman midfielder Gabby Monfredo (Worcester, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal off a short crossing pass from classmate Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) 2:37 into the fourth quarter to cap off the scoring for Wheaton.

The Lyons finished with a 24-6 shot advantage as well as a 12-3 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Wheaton senior goalkeeper Morgan Karnes (Durham, Maine) made three saves in 45 minutes of action to pick up her third win of the season. Karnes' best stop came on a breakaway bid by BSU senior Jacquelyn Legendre (Westport, Mass.) late in the third quarter. Junior Greta Reilly (Manchester, N.H.) came on for the fourth quarter and turned aside the only shot she faced, a close-range blast by Legendre early in the session.

Senior netminder Jillian Delaney (Foxborough, Mass.) stopped 14 shots in 45 minutes of work for the Bears. Delaney now has 155 saves through 16 games. It marks the highest single-season save total for the Bears since Katie Weber notched 169 saves over 21 games in 2010.

Both teams wrap up the 2019 campaign later this week. The Bears host Little East Conference foe Salem State University on Friday afternoon at 3:30, while the Lyons entertain NEWMAC rival Wellesley College on Saturday at noon.
