Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 to WPI

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Worcester State University women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the WPI Engineers Tuesday evening at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 0-1-1. The win moves the Engineers to 2-0-0.

The two teams battled defensively during the beginning of the first half. At the 36 minute mark, Lauren Kaija (Reading, VT) put the Engineers on the board when she sailed one into the back of the net past Worcester State goalkeeper, Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.).

After the half, WPI sealed the win early on with a goal from Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) when she sailed past the Lancer defense and scored unassisted on Tori Socci (Blackstone, Mass.). Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.) played a strong game for the Lancers with a few scoring opportunities late in the second half, but ultimately came up short.

Spellman recorded three saves before leaving the field due to injury. Socci picked up six saves in her debut for the Lancers' 2019 season. Mandy St. Germain (Worcester, Mass.) stopped two goals in her shutout for the Engineers.

Worcester State will be back in action on Thursday when they head to Salve Regina at 3:30 PM.
