Worcester, MA- After a windy week forced the movement of some early season games, the Worcester State Baseball team (0-1, 0-0) is back on the diamond today with a trip to Wentworth to take on the Leopards as they look to claim their first win of the season.
Final
Worcester State: 8
Wentworth: 5
How it Happened:
The first inning was uneventful for both teams as they each went down 1-2-3. The Lancers would find their energy in the second on a two-out rally in the 2nd as Junior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA) and first year Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) were both hit by pitches, followed by a two-run double from sophomore Jeremy DeLacruz (Lowell, MA). Wentworth would be quickly worked off the mound by graduate student Ben Smith (Bourne, MA) to carry a 2-0 lead into the third. Back to back bobbled plays by Worcester would allow the Leopards to grab a run back but the top of the fourth had Catlin slamming a homer to right field to bring home sophomore Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) to take a 4-1 lead. Wentworth would manage to find a second run in the bottom of the fifth but sophomore Gavin Price (Worcester, MA) would shut down the Leopards through the seventh.
Things began to heat up again in the bottom of the 8th with two singles sending across two runners on base to tie the game up at 4-4. In the top of the ninth Thurber would take a ball to the body to then be brought home by another Catlin RBI, this time a single to reclaim the 5-4 lead. A wild pitch on a senior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) at bat would find Catlin score run six which was immediately followed up by a Smith double to bring across sophomore Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) to take the 7-4 lead. Worcester would wrap up their scoring on a senior Anthony Iamarone (Providence, RI) single that would find first year Chris Mondesir (Roslindale, MA) racing across the plate.
Junior Craig Barnes (Billerica, MA) would look to seal the victory in the ninth, grabbing a first batter strikeout. A walk and a single followed it up to allow a ground out to score run five but Barnes made the next batter swing early, forcing a flyout to center field to wrap up the game and the Lancer victory at 8-5.
