Falcons Split MASCAC Twin Bill with Owls

 

O'Brien Paces Falcons with 3 RBI's

Westfield, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team split a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) double header with the Owls of Westfield State this afternoon as the Falcons earned a 10-4 triumph in game one and fell 9-1 in 5 innings in the nightcap.

How It Happened

Game One

The Falcons struck first and never looked back in game one putting a five spot on the board to start the game. With runners on second and third junior Audrey Johnson (Fitchburg, Mass.) had an RBI infield single followed by a single to right field from Falcons Split MASCAC Twin Bill with Owls(Palm Coast, Fla.) for the early 2-0 lead. A batter later Morgan Cormier (Leominster, Mass.) platted Johnson with a RBI single to centerfield. A pair of miscues by the Owls defense added two more runs in the inning.

Senior Sarah Meunier (Deerfield, Mass.) drilled a 2 RBI double to centerfield in the bottom of the frame scoring teammates Farrah Adam (West Springfield, Mass.) and Alyssa Clark (Uxbridge, Mass.) to make it a 5-2 game.

The Falcons would get the runs right back in the top of the second capped by a sacrifice fly from junior Haley O'Brien (Lynnfield, Mass.). O'Brien would add a RBI single in the fourth and sixth innings for the 10-4 final.

Game Two

After two scoreless innings the Falcons took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Savone but Westfield would answer back with six runs in the bottom of the inning.  Senior Jordyn Carpenter (Mashpee, Mass.) knocked in a pair with a single to center field followed by home runs from Clark and Meunier to extend the lead to 6-1.  

Clark delivered the big hit in the bottom of the fourth, a one out, 2 run homer to left field en route to the 9-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Johnson led the way for the Falcons in game one, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while O'Brien had 3 RBI's on a 2-for-4 game.
  • Savone and Cormier each had two hits and an RBI in game one
  • Senior Taylor Colvin (Lancaster, Mass.) went the distance in game one, allowing 3 earned runs with six strikeouts.
  • Adam and Meunier paced the Owls with two hits each in game one
  • Freshman Dana Cisowski (Torrington, Conn.) led the Falcons in game two with a pair of hits, Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.) had the other hit for the Green and Gold.
  • Colvin took the loss in game two, allowing four earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.
  • Stephanie Scoville (Northfield, Mass.) earned the win for the hosts, allowing just one earned run with 5 k's.

Both teams will face off again tomorrow at Fitchburg State University in a non-conference double header match-up starting at 2:00pm.
