Westfield State softball dropped a pair of non-conference games to Springfield College on Wednesday, falling by scores of 5-2 and 8-0 at Potter Field in Springfield, Mass.
In game 1, Owls' grad student Meghan Doyle reached base four times, going 3-3 at the plate with a walk, and driving in Westfield's first run of the day.
Starting pitcher Janna Jose (L, 0-1) went the distance on the mound, allowing nine hits and four earned runs, and helped her own cause at the plate by going 1-3 with a double and an RBI in the second inning that put the Owls up 2-1.
Springfield tallied three times in the sixth to grab the win with Carissa Pecchia doubling home two runs.
In the nightcap, the Owls ran into a buzzsaw in Springfield starting pitcher Amelia DeRosa, who tossed a 5-inning no hitter while striking out two and walking none, with the game shortened by the 8-run rule.
Springfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, with the big blow a 2-run double from Breannah McCann. Mackenzie Doyle added two hits and two runs for the Pride.
Gianna Conte took the pitching loss for the Owls
Westfield State is now 19-11 after the doubleheader, while Springfield is 27-5.
The Owls get back into conference play on Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader at Salem State.
