Falcons Soar Past Lyons, Notch First Win of Season
Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team notched their first win of the season with a 58-49 victory over Mt. Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon at Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened
1st Quarter
The Falcons moved to an early 6-2 score with hoops from Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.), Juliana Davis (Templeton, Mass.), and Rylie Harlow (Hanson, Mass.). Mt. Holyoke knotted the game at 6-6 with a layup from Isabel Cordes (Yorktown, Va.) and took an 8-6 lead with a jumper from the baseline from Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Mass.). The Green and Gold buckled down on defense and went on a 10-0 run to close out the quarter. Allison Prentis (Mansfield, Mass.) had two key buckets for the Falcons down the stretch.
2nd Quarter
Fitchburg State upped their advantage (21-10), capped by back-to-back scores from rookie Aliza Som (Lowell, Mass.). Som connected on a three-pointer, then a steal off the inbound, and a layup in the paint to forge the Falcons ahead. Junior Nicole Lutalo (Kampala, Uganda) popped in a jumper for the Lyons to cut the deficit to 26-13, but four points from Som pushed the lead to 30-13 for Fitchburg State.
3rd Quarter
Fitchburg State upped their advantage (41-22), going on an 8-5 run to open the third frame. The Lyons countered with six points from Alex Twomey (Nutley, NJ.) to make it a 44-28 game. However, Prentis answered with a trey, and a pair from the charity stripe from Almeida extended the Falcons' lead to 49-28 after three quarters.
4th Quarter
A jump shot from Stephanie Hart (Shirley, Mass.) at 8:36 gave the Falcons their biggest lead of the game (54-31). Mt. Holyoke answered with six unanswered points, including a three-point play from Twomey, but the Falcons settled back down with hoops from Som and Caileen Hurley (Whitman, Mass.) to secure the first victory
Inside the Numbers
- Som paced the Falcons with 16 points, four steals, and three rebounds, Prentis finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two steals, and an assist
- For the Lyons, Twomey led the way with a game-high 22 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, and three assists
- Mt. Holyoke shot 20-for-57 (35.1%) from the field and (4-for-22) 18.2% from three-point range
- Fitchburg State finished 23-for-68 (33.8%) overall and (5-for-22) 22.7% for beyond the arc
- Mt. Holyoke held a 47-43 advantage on the boards
