Worcester, MA- In a bummed up series, the Worcester State Baseball team (12-4, 3-0) makes the trip out west to take on conference rivals Westfield State in what could ultimately be a crucial series for their postseason seeding.
Final
Game 1
Worcester State: 0
Westfield State: 9
Game 2
Worcester State: 4
Westfield State: 1
How it Happened:
The Lancers travelled to play Westfield State where they got underway with both teams playing solid defense with the early offensive nod going to the Owls. Worcester State would fend them off in the early innings, but the continued pressure in the third would begin to see the Lancers begin to crack. It started with one run by Jonathan Toth, and that same inning there would be an error that would let up the second run of the game scored by Alex Martin. Once Westfield was able to find their rhythm they rode that momentum into a 7-0 lead into the top of the fifth as Worcester looked to adjust their own offensive success. The Lancers would begin to put up a fight stopping the bleeding for a short while, but Westfield State returned to form, and scored two more runs. Stretching the lead to 9-0. The massive lead would be too much for the Lancers to comeback as they succumb to a loss at the hands of Westfield.
In the Lancers second outing, Worcester found more balance on defense. Westfield would manage to grab the first run in the first but the top of the second would settle the score as a junior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA) double would send home senior Anthony Iamarone (Providence, RI). Worcester would add a run in the sixth as a senior Xavier Quezada (Providence, RI) single would send in Thurber for the run lead. The Lancers would continue to extend their lead in the top of the seventh as senior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) would nail a homer to deep left field sending in first year Chris Mondesir (Roslindale, MA) for the 4-1 lead and shut out any Owls attempt in the bottom of the inning as graduate student Ben Smith (Bourne, MA) would go for the complete game win recording nine strikeouts in the action to claim the career top spot for Worcester State Baseball.
