Pioneer Softball Splits Doubleheader

The Alfred State Softball team split today's doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic in Tampa, FL. The Pioneers defeated Crown College 6-3 and fell to MCLA 12-4.

In Game 1:

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning. Nicole Youngberg hit a two-out single that scored Farrell from third base. The Blue and Gold tallied on more runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. Audrey Farrell had an RBI double in the 3rd and had another RBI basehit in the 4th inning. Sarah Boyce and Kailey Wonica tallied RBI hits of their own in the 4th. Wonica tripled and Boyce doubled in the inning. Farrell also threw 7 innings of 2-run ball. Farrell struck out four and only walked two.

 

In Game 2:

The Pioneers came out hot again with the bats, scoring three runs in the first inning. Nicole Youngberg and Felicia Capito had RBI basehits and Kailey Wonica tacked on an RBI in the inning as well. MCLA tacked on three of their own in the first and added more as the game progressed taking the lead and keeping it throughout.

Some standouts for the Pioneers include:

Sarah Boyce: Boyce went 2-3 with a run scored in the leadoff spot. 

Faith Capito: Capito went 2-2 from the dish and drew a walk. 

Alfred State plays again Wednesday, with games against Wilmington and William Paterson starting at 9 a.m.
