Baseball drops a pair to Suffolk University

Auburndale, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader (10-5, 10-4) to the Rams of Suffolk University at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational.

How It Happened – Game 1

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second inning, the Falcons evened the score. With two outs, senior Zachary Gull (Rutland, Mass.) continued his hot hand with a wall-ball double to left field and scored on a single to right field by sophomore Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.).

The Falcons added an unearned run in the top of the third inning with a deep sacrifice fly from junior Zachary May (Rochdale, Mass.). The Rams matched the Falcons with a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Rich Gilbride (Beverly, Mass.) platting classmate Logan Heckman (Mechanicsville, Va.).

Suffolk tacked on five runs in the home half of the fourth inning. Harder had a 2 RBI double down the right field line scoring sophomore Gino Desimone (Medford, Mass.) and senior Zach Aresty (Wayland, Mass.) for the big hit of the frame.

Fitchburg State battled back in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-5. Senior Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.) knocked in classmate Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.) with a double down the left field line after Macomber had singled to open the inning. Junior Johan Asencio (Clinton, Mass.) singled through the left side to move Pingitore to third base, then Gull doubled home Pingitore and Asencio scored on a sac fly from Eramo

The Rams added three insurance runs in the sixth inning en route to the 10-5 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Junior Aidan Ward (Dunstable, Mass.) was tabbed with the loss for the Falcons. He went 3.2 innings with 8 hits, 7 earned runs and 5 strikeouts
  • Suffolk pitcher, EJ Birtch earned the victory. He went for 5 innings with ten hits, four runs and three strikeouts.
  • Macomber went 3-for-4 for the Falcons, while Eramo delivered two RBI's.

How It Happened – Game 2

Fitchburg struck first in the nightcap. In the second inning Zachary May drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on Vincent Eramo's single to left. Junior Cameron Donahue (Methuen, Mass.) delivered an RBI single before the Rams answered back with three runs to lead 3-1 after three innings.

The Rams added two more runs in the fourth frame. First Luke Harder delivered an RBI single and scored the second run of the inning on a defensive miscue from the Falcons to push the lead to 5-1. Suffolk broke the game open with four more runs in the fifth inning (9-1).

The Falcons added a run in the fifth with a RBI from junior Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) and freshman Kameron Downey (Dracut, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate hit and a pair of RBI's in the seventh for the 10-1 final.

  • Freshman Taryn Laramie (Franklin, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Falcons, pitching 3.0 innings with 4 strikeouts.
  • Suffolk pitcher, CJ Barrett earned the victory, going two inning with one hit.
  • Donahue led Fitchburg with one RBI on a 2-for-3 game at the plate.
