Softball Splits Pair on Monday, Blanks Cobleskill 10-0

WESTFIELD, Mass. –  Westfield State softball split a pair of games on Monday, falling  to NYU by a 3-0 score before rebounding to blank SUNY-Cobleskill 10-0 at North Collier Park in Naples, Fla.

Westfield State is now 2-2 on the season.

In the opener, the Owls' lone hit of the game came on Abby Higgins single to left field in the second inning, as NYU starter Angelina Biele, (1-1)struck out 15 and walked none,  retiring 16 straight hitters after Higgins was caught stealing in the second inning to shut the door on Westfield and earn the win.

Gianna Conte (0-1) started and worked three innings in taking the loss. She allowed four hits, walked two and struck out one.  Katherine Canty tossed three innings in relief

Marina Egbert and Chloe Blanc each delivered rbi singles in third inning for the Violets (2-3), and Madi Hand drove in an insurance run with a double in the fifth inning.

Westfield State starter Stephanie Scoville (2-0) got the shutout win, spinning five innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.   She struck out the side in the fifth inning to close out the game via the eight-run rule.

Higgins stayed hot at the plate with a base hit, 2 rbi and two runs scored.  Meghan Doyle had a pair of hits, and Westfield got doubles from Sara Hough and Janna Jose.

Cobleskill (1-3) starter Marissa Wheeler (1-1) took the pitching loss, yielding seven hits and five walks.  Both hits for the Flying Tigers came in the first inning, on a single from Mackenze Wendlken and a double from Alexis Miranda before Scoville shut them down for the duration.

Westfield struck for four runs in the bottom of the second, with the big inning fueled by several Cobleskill errors, before Hough's double plated the fourth run of the inning.

The Owls have tomorrow off, before facing Lesley University at 11:00 a.m. and Mitchell College at 3:00 p.m. at the North Collier complex in Naples, Fla. on Wednesday.
