WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State
College baseball team recorded a doubleheader sweep of Westfield
State, 5-0 and 11-4, on Friday, April 10th in Westfield.
Backed by the two-hit pitching of junior right hander Sean
O'Neill (Norwood), the Bears took the opener, 5-0. In the
second game, Bridgewater survived a late comeback by Westfield to
post an 11-4 nine-inning victory.
It appeared the Owls were on their way to getting shut out in both
games, but they mounted a big rally in the bottom of the seventh
inning to send the second game into extra frames.
Pete Grillo led off with a walk and moved to third
on a one-out double by Matt Kelly. Pinch hitter
Will Garner then crushed a single to deep right
field to score Grillo. Kelly scored on a sacrifice fly by
Adam Franke to make it 4-2.
Brad King kept the rally alive with a two-out
single and Ben Wagner worked his way on base with
a full-count walk. Jeff Fields then ripped a
two-run single to centerfield to tie the score at 4-4. But the
rally ended with Ben Campbell flied out on a nice
running catch by center fielder J.T. Mooney (North
Attleboro).
Neither team threatened in the eighth inning, but Bridgewater broke
loose for seven runs in the top of the ninth. The game-winning hit
was a one-out, bases loaded, two RBI single by David
Dole (West Bridgewater).
Bridgewater out-hit Westfield, 16-6, with six of the hits coming in
the ninth inning. Shortstop Brian Medairos
(Brockton) was 5 for 5 with two RBI and Mark
Claffey (Bellingham) was 3 for 5 with an RBI.
Kelly LaDow (East Falmouth) and Matt
Greenberg (Norwell) cracked back-to-back solo home runs in
the first inning to stake the Bears to a 2-0 lead.
The Bears added another run in the third on an RBI single by
Claffey who also scored a key run in the top of the seventh on a
wild pitch with two outs.
In the opener, O'Neill only struck out one batter in his
seven-inning complete-game shutout. He walked two along with his
two hits.
Claffey was 2 for 3 and David Kiloski (Lowell) was
2 for 3, including the game-winning hit, a two-run single in the
second inning.
