Albertus Softball Takes Game One In Thrilling Fashion, Drop Game Two To Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team won a thrilling game one, 7-3 in eight innings before dropping the back end, 9-1 to Westfield State in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

In the game one win, the Falcons tied the game in the top of the seventh inning before erupting for four runs in the eighth inning. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) was 4-for-4 in game one, while Julianna Petruzziello (West Haven, Conn.) drove in three runs. Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.) went 1-for-4, including the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth.

Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) had two hits in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After both teams left a runner on base in the first inning, the Falcons got on the board in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly from Petruzziello to score Laforte who reached on an error to begin the inning.
  • Scheid hit a one-out double in the third and scored after a sacrifice fly from Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) to put Albertus up 2-0. The Owls got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Hannah Wodecki.
  • Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth until the Owls got back-to-back singles from Alyssa Clark and Rachel Brewer-Karimi.
  • The drama began in the top of the seventh as Jazmyn Browne (Bristol, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, advancing to second on a bunt before Arent beat out an infield single that scored Browne to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Ema Signore (East Haven, Conn.) relieved starting pitcher Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) in the seventh and left the leadoff runner on base, sending the game to extra innings.
  • Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) started the top of the eighth on second base and was driven home by Laforte with an RBI single to give Albertus a 4-3 lead. It was the first of four consecutive singles by the Falcons, capped by a two-run single by Petruzziello to make it a 6-3 game. Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) added one more insurance run in the inning with an RBI single with one out in the inning. 
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Signore retired the side in order, giving Albertus the game one win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Scheid started the game off with a leadoff single and came around to score on a dropped third strike to give Albertus the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Owls tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double from Sarah Bingham and took a 5-1 lead after the second inning as the first six batters reached base that included RBI singles from Sarah Hough and Wodecki.
  • Albertus had just two hits the rest of the way as the Owls scored one more run in the third and ended the game via the mercy rule with three runs after a two-run triple by Wodecki and an RBI single from Bingham.
