NORTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to host Wheaton College in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior reserve forward Adam Sussman
(Swampscott, MA) tallied three points and the game-winning
goal to lead Wheaton past BSC.
The Lyons ran their winning streak to 16 games over the Bears while
picking up their 19th straight season-opening victory.
Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA) tallied the
game's opening goal for the hosts, while sophomore Conor
Finn (Kennebunk, ME) made it a 3-1 contest after scoring
his initial collegiate marker.
For the Bears, first-year athlete Simao Mendes
(Brockton, MA) brought the visitors within one in the waning
minutes of the opening stanza. Sophomore Scott
Macedonia (North Attleboro, MA) was credited with an
assist on the play.
Junior goalie Cole Davidson (Needham, MA) had two
stops in the victory, while junior back David
Winrow (South Weymouth, MA) came away with a big defensive
stop in the first half. Bridgewater State senior goalie
Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) made four saves in the
loss.
The first half saw limited offensive action for either team until
the last 13-plus minutes, as a trio of goals was scored during a
10-minute span. Sussman and freshman David
Turina (North Yarmouth, ME) worked with Moreira for the
opening score at 13:39. On the Sussman winner just 2:24 after
that, freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA)
picked up his first collegiate assist.
Mendes cut the Bear deficit in half just before the break, but
Finn's header in the 78th minute sealed the win, as he converted
sophomore Chris Thomas' (Cumberland, ME) helper.
