WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State women's soccer was unable to overcome a three-goal first half from University of New England as the Owls dropped a 5-1 non-conference tilt from Biddeford, Maine on Sunday afternoon.
Playing their second match in as many days, the Owls surrendered an early goal from Nor'easters forward Kylie Curtin (Loudon, N.H.) 7:28 into the game. Midway through the first half, Brooke Pierotti (Scituate, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the season, increasing the UNE lead to two goals.
With the Owls trailing by three entering the second half, Jaida Cochran (Middleboro, Mass.) trimmed the Westfield deficit to two goals, collecting a feed from first-year forward Gabby Stolfi (Newington, Conn.) just six minutes into the half.
The game would remain a two-goal game late into the match where Curtin tallied her second goal of the game in the 76th minute, pushing the Nor'easters' lead back to three goals to ultimately secure the win.
The Owls outshot UNE on the afternoon 15-12 but were held to just one goal in part to the play of Nor'easters goalkeeper Anna Flaherty (Lynn, Mass.) who racked up seven saves to pick up the victory. Kiana Muratsuka (Mililani, Hawaii) had a high danger chance for the Owls early in the second half with her shot ringing off the crossbar.
Julia Robak (Chicopee, Mass.) and Kayla Santucci (Agawam, Mass.) split time in net with both players registering two saves in 45 minutes of action.
Westfield State will return home as part of a three-game home stand beginning on Wednesday against Keene State at 7:00 P.M. from Alumni Field.
