Women's Basketball Shuts Down Salem State

SALEM, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team snapped its brief two-game skid on Saturday afternoon with a 64-47 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Salem State University at Twohig Gymnasium.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 9-6 on the season and 1-2 in the MASCAC. Salem State drops to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in MASCAC competition.

The first half was all Lancers, as Worcester State's defense held the Vikings to just seven points in the opening 20 minutes to take a 27-7 lead to the locker room. Salem State went 10:18 without a point in the half, as Worcester State went on a 15-0 run before a Nicole Freddo layup ended the run with 4:51 remaining in the second quarter. Sophomore Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass.) led all players with nine first half points for the Lancers.

Salem State found its stride offensively in the second half, but the 20-point deficit proved far too much for the Vikings to overcome as the Lancers secured their first MASCAC victory of the season. The hosts outscored Worcester State 40-37 in the game's final 20 minutes, but the Vikings never cut the deficit to less than the game's final margin of 17. Midway through the third quarter, Worcester State's edge ran to as many as 31 points.

Twelve different Lancers scored points in the victory, led by Blomgren and freshman Charlotte MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine) with 11 each. Senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) scored nine points with a team-high four assists, while junior Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) added six points and six rebounds off the bench.

The game's leading scorer was Salem State's Liz Zaiter, who put in 14 points while pitching in a game-high 11 rebounds. Freddo was close behind Zaiter with 13 points and nine boards in the defeat.

Worcester State will be back in action on Wednesday as the Lancers host MCLA at 5:30 p.m. at John P. Brissette Court. Salem returns to the court the same evening, hosting Framingham State.
