McElroy Leads Field Hockey to 3-1 Win Over UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Charlotte McElroy (Carver, Mass.) had a hand in all three goals to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Monday night at foggy Cressy Field.

The Bears improve to 4-7 as they snapped a four-game losing streak. The Corsairs, who fall to 4-11, have dropped eight of their last nine contests. BSU now owns a 25-18-4 lead in a series that began in 1973, including three straight wins.

McElroy, who tallied two goals and an assist, converted a penalty stroke to open the scoring 1:29 into the second quarter. It was McElroy's first goal since October 14th of last year, exactly one year to the day.

Senior midfielder Jenna Carvalho (Westport, Mass.) scored off the rebound of a Brooke Lydon (So., Bridgewater, Mass.) shot to knot the game at 1-1 with 9:07 remaining until halftime.

The score remained tied until the 10:31 mark of the fourth quarter when McElroy buried her second penalty corner attempt to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The Bears tacked on an insurance tally with just 1:42 left to play as freshman forward Samantha Souza (Dartmouth, Mass.) converted off a penalty corner redirecting a shot by McElroy. The goal marked Souza's team-leading sixth of the season.

Bridgwater held an 18-12 shot advantage for the game while UMass finished with a 9-6 edge in penalty corner attempts.

BSU junior netminder Brianna Gagnon (Tewksbury, Mass.) made five saves to pick up her third win of the season. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Trombly (Foxborough, Mass.) turned aside six shots in the setback for the Corsairs.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Salem State University on Wednesday night for a seven o'clock MASCAC game with the Vikings. The Corsairs head to the University of Southern Maine on Saturday to take on the Huskies at noon in a Little East Conference affair.
