SALEM, Mass. -- Senior David
Miller (Lancaster, PA) scored the game-winner in the Salem
State University Vikings' 2-0 victory over the Bridgewater State
Bears in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference
match-up at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win gives the Vikings sole possession over the Bears atop the
MASCAC leader board. Miller's goal increases his team high scoring
totals to six goals and 12 points.
Forward Joao Goncalves (Saugus, MA), midfielder
Tony Moreno (Lynn, MA), goalkeeper Luis
Marques (Fall River, MA) and Miller were all honored
before the game for their last year of play as seniors for Salem
State University.
Marques earned the win four saves as the Vikings improve to 5-3-3
overall this season and 4-0 in the conference. DJ
Siewierski (Stow, MA) was marked for the loss. Siewierski
put in a full day's work as he faced twelve total shots on
goal with ten saves. Bridgewater State's record now stands at 8-3
on the season and 3-1 in the conference.
The Vikings out-shot the Bears 7-5 in the first half.
Moreover, Donald Flores (Cranston, RI) was unable
to capitalize for Bridgewater on an open net in the fifteenth
minute as he booted the ball over the cross bar. The Vikings' best
goal opportunity came from David Miller
(Lancaster, PA) whose first shot was saved by the fingertips of a
leaping Siewierski. Later a laser from Matt
Figuierdo (Wilmington, MA) was pushed away by the keeper
at 41:05.
Head Coach Don Goodwin's Salem State squad took
the momentum into the second half as the offense pressured the
Bears heavily in the opening minutes. The Vikings offense
methodically moved the ball down field. Miller scored on a quick
play in front of the net after being fed by Tony
Moreno (Lynn, MA) and Rafael Santos (East
Boston, MA) to break the scoreless tie.
The Salem State defense continued to neutralize the Bridgewater
State offense in the second half. The Bears were out-shot 11-5 in
the second half. Jose DePina (Boston, MA),
Bridgewater State's goal leader, was held without a shot through
the entirety of the match.
The Vikings added an insurance goal at 89:54 after Owen
Quane (Weymouth, MA) was masterfully fed by a streaking
Figuierdo to finish the game 2-0.
