Field Hockey Downs Anna Maria on Opening Day

PAXTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University field hockey team scored four goals in the span of just eight minutes in the second half to pick up a 4-0 win over Anna Maria College in non-conference action at AMCat Field.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 1-0 on the season, while Anna Maria drops to 0-1.

Worcester State controlled the play in the first half, but were unable to break through with the game's opening goal. The Lancers outshot the AMCats 9-0 in the first half, but the teams still went into the break scoreless.

Junior Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) finally broke the deadlock with just under three and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter. Classmate Sarah Duff (Warren, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the goal that put Worcester State ahead 1-0.

Just over a minute later, senior Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.) buried her first goal of the season off a feed from sophomore Julianna Martinelli (Auburn, Mass.). Hayes would score her second goal of the quarter with under a minute showing on the clock to put Worcester State firmly in control.

Senior Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.), who assisted on the second Hayes goal, added an insurance marker in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Monopoli was credited with an assist on the tally.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) got the shutout victory for Worcester State, and did not face any AMCat shots on the day. The Lancers outshot Anna Maria 18-0, and held a 26-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Worcester State will turn around in less than 24 hours, facing Clark University on the road at 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
