Men's Soccer Edges Mass. Maritime, 2-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team remained perfect in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) as the visiting Bears edged Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 2-1, on Friday night at Clean Harbors Stadium.

With the win, the Bears improve to 7-4-2 on the season and 5-0 in the MASCAC standings. The Bears also extended their unbeaten streak against MASCAC teams to 22 games (17 regular season, five tournament) dating back to 2022.

Maritime falls to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Bridgewater State is now 34-7-4 versus the Buccaneers since 1980.

Junior defender Gavin Norton (Rockland, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Nicholas Ribeiro (Bellingham, Mass.) each scored for the visitors while senior forward Dominek Borden (New Bedford, Mass.) dished out a pair of assists.

Norton staked the Bears to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with his second goal of the season. Norton buried a close-range shot into the right side of the cage off a goal-line crossing pass from Borden.

Maritime sophomore forward Brody Calvert (Windsor, Mass.) capitalized on a defensive miscue to knot the score at 1-1 in the 51st minute. Sophomore defender Kevin Ginnetty (Carver, Mass.) sent a long volley towards the 18 that was mishandled by a BSU defender. Calvert, who applied the pressure, collected the loose ball and flicked a shot off the left post and in.

Less than five minutes later, Ribeiro reclaimed the lead for the Bears as he converted off the rebound of a Borden shot. The goal marked Ribeiro's second of the season.

Maritime had three shots in the final 3 ½ minutes of the game, including a header attempt by sophomore midfielder Jack Turmel (West Springfield, Mass.) with just 15 seconds showing on the scoreboard, but the Buccaneers were unable to pot the equalizer.

The Bears held a 15-10 shot advantage for the game while corner kick attempts were even at three apiece.

BSU senior netminder Lukas Ekmanis made three saves to pick up his sixth win of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Preston Joia (Mashpee, Mass.) turned aside three shots in the setback for Maritime.

The Bears travel to UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon for a three o'clock game with the Corsairs. The Buccaneers are off until Saturday, October 26th when they head to Framingham State University to take on Rams in a MASCAC affair at 11:00 AM.
