Women's Soccer Falls to Westfield State, 3-1

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Kate MacLellan (Wilbraham, MA) tallied a goal and an assist to lead Westfield State to a 3-1 hard-earned victory over Bridgewater State in Mass. State Conference women's soccer action on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Westfield, 2-0 in the conference, improved to 7-1-1 overall in running its non-losing streak to eight straight games. The Owls are ranked 10th in the latest New England Division III poll.  

MacLellan opened the scoring in the seventh minute when she ripped a shot from the left side that deflected hard off a Bridgewater defender into the goal.

The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute when MacLellan broke free down the left side and crossed a pass to senior Meg Gearin (Groton, MA), who delivered the second goal.

Westfield took a 3-0 lead in the 60th minute when freshman Leann Rivard (Chicopee, MA) scored after taking a nice feed inside the box from junior Ali Pease (Ludlow, MA).

Bridgewater (2-4-1, 0-2) played well the entire game and registered 12 shots to Westfield's 16. The Bears got on the scoreboard with 2:19 left in the game on an unassisted goal by junior Christina Ortiz (Dedham, MA).

Westfield sophomore goalie Jess Pieciak (Three Rivers, MA) recorded nine saves. Bear keeper Kayla Grover (Haverhill, MA) stopped seven shots.
