Worcester State Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener to Bridgewater State

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Soccer team hosted the Bridgewater State Bears in a MASCAC conference opener. Worcester State came into the game 0-2-1 looking to grab their first win of the season. Bridgewater came into the game sitting at 1-2 . Both teams came into the match looking to start strong in their MASCAC schedule.

The first half for Worcester State started strong with an early attempt by first year Olivia Magierowski (Brimfield, Mass.), but Bears goal minder Logan Levesque was able to corral the ball to stop the threat. . The Lancer's continued to keep the ball on the offensive end but Bridgewater's defense refused to let their Lancer's score. Worcester utilized impressive form and teamwork to hustle the ball up the field but were unable to find some needed relief with a ball to the back of the net. A shot by the visiting bears first, Yessica Duran (Gardner, Mass) hit the post midway through the half, giving the first threat to the Lancers strong defensive wall. Senior Riley Patenaude (Pepperell, Mass) and junior Raelyn Callahan (Pepperell, Mass) connected up and down the field to move the ball across the pitch. Sophomore Mallory Dupuis (Leominster, MA) along with sophomore Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) and first year Jess Forbes (Clinton, MA) helped keep the game scoreless going into the second half.

 

Less than a minute into the second half Bridgewater was able to find their first and only goal of the game off the the foot of senior Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, MA) who sent a pass from a free kick attempt by junior Mia Chrisafideis (Marlborough, MA) sailed just over the outstretched arms of Dupuis put the Bears up 1-0. Neither team would back down for the remainder of the match, as each team looked to grab an edge in the game. Nearly half way through the second half, the Lancers saw their own chance off a free position shot when first year Olivia Magierowski (Brimfield, MA) sent the ball over the goalies head, but unlike the early Bears attempt, the bottom of the cross bar would come into play, knocking the ball off the line and the Lancers scoreless, which would ultimately hold for the remainder of the game.

 

Dupuis ended the day with three saves, while Levasque walked away with nine total saves. Magierowski led the Lancers with five solid attempts on frame.

 

Worcester State moves to (0-3-1, 0-1) while the Bear are now (2-2, 1-0). Worcester State is back in action next Wednesday when they head to Keene State for a 6:30pm start.
