Bears Steal Two from Vikings

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – After a rain delay halted Salem State softball's doubleheader in Bridgewater on Sunday, April 6th, Bridgewater State University was able to pick up a pair of wins, 9-8 and 10-9, to drop the Vikings to 8-10 overall and 4-2 in conference action.

Game One (Continued from Sunday, April 6)

  • Samantha Gaona (Billerica, Mass.) brought around the first run of the game after her single down the right field line made it a 1-0 game. The Bears would follow up in the home half of the inning when Makayla Ansell (Menifee, Calif.) tripled to right field to tie the game at one before crossing the plate herself to give the Bears the 2-1 tilt.
  • The Vikings would remain in striking distance over the next two innings before a Paige Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) triple and Emily Henning (Grafton, Mass.) double highlighted a five hit, four run inning to give the Vikings the 7-4 edge, however the Bears would answer in the bottom of the inning with three runs to bring the game to a seven-run stalemate.
  • The Bears added two runs in the bottom of the fifth before adding one more for good measure in the sixth frame to take the 10-7 victory over the Vikings.

Game Two

  • After three innings the Vikings found themselves up, 8-0, with a Souza double accounting for two runs in the opening inning and a Dawn Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) double accounting for three in the second inning.
  • The Bears started their rally in the home half of the fourth when a single up the middle brought around their first runs of the game to cut the Vikings' lead to six (8-2).
  • After adding two more runs in the fifth, the Bears would explode for five runs in the sixth frame with Sydney Schaefer's (Swarthmore, Pa.)  three-run single being the decider as they would go onto retire all three Vikings' batters in the top of the seventh to take the 9-8 victory, solidifying their sweep over the Vikings.

Noteworthy

  • Souza's triple in game one marked the first of her young career as a Viking.
  • Between both games Souza, Eisnor, and Isabella Perrotti (Winthrop, Mass.) all recorded 3 RBIs.

The Vikings have a quick turnaround, as they welcome the Bluejays from the University of Saint Josephs (Conn.) for a doubleheader tomorrow, April 10. The first game is scheduled to start at 4p.m..
