Baseball Splits Non-Conference Twinbill with Westfield State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Westfield State University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The Bears (10-15) won the opener, 3-1, while the Owls (17-5) earned the split with a 9-2 victory in game two. Four of Westfield's five losses this season have come against Bridgewater.

Game One

Matt Josselyn (Hanson, Mass.) tossed six solid innings in game one to record his third win of the season. Josselyn (3-3) allowed just one run on four hits with three walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.

Tyler Dasilva-Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) worked around an error in the seventh to record his team-leading fourth save of the season.

An RBI single off the bat of Steve Saucier (Auburn, Mass.) in the top of the second inning staked the visiting Owls to the early 1-0 lead.

The Bears answered with a run in the home half of the second. Back-to-back singles by Dan Saraceno (Mansfield, Mass.) and Joe Frechette (Plymouth, Mass.) followed by a Westfield error loaded the bases with nobody out. Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) then lined an RBI single into leftfield to knot the game at 1-1.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth. Lindsay led off the frame with a double and Tamulevich walked to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Jay Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) then reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowing Lindsay to score all the way from second. James followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.

Lindsay went 2-for-2 with a double, walk, run and RBI to lead the BSU offense in game one.

Vincenzo Camera (East Haven, Conn.) went the distance on the mound in the setback for Westfield. Camera (2-2) gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Game Two

Nate Langmeier (East Granby, Conn.) recorded his sixth win of the season on the mound for the Owls. Langmeier (6-0) gave up two runs on six hits over six solid innings with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

Zack Graveline (Prospect, Conn.), Brett Dooley (Cohasset, Mass.) and Ethan Day (Meridan, Conn,) tallied two hits apiece to highlight Westfield's 11-hit attack in the nightcap. The trio combined for six runs scored, while Graveline and Dooley each drove in a run.

Sean Goudey (Weymouth, Mass.) reached safely in each of his three plate appearances to pace the BSU offense in game two. Goudey went 2-for-2 with a walk, stolen base and run scored.

Trever Dennett (Kingston, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for the Bears. Dennett gave up four runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Bears committed three errors in the contest as three of the nine runs were unearned. BSU pitching also walked six batters over the first five innings.

Up Next: The Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Fitchburg State University next Friday afternoon with game one of the MASCAC doubleheader getting underway at 2:00 PM. The Owls travel to Salem State University next Saturday afternoon for a one o'clock MASCAC twinbill with the Vikings.
