Lancers Hold Off Pilgrims to Claim Victory

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Basketball team (2-3, 0-0) return to Central Mass in a battle with New England College on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers are aiming to get themselves back to .500 on the weekend and continue to find their wins in the early portion of the season.

Final

Worcester State: 60

New England College: 48

How it Happened:

In today's matchup against the New England College Pilgrims Worcester State started hot as they jumped to a quick ten point lead, setting the tone for the rest of the quarter. Sophomore Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) was able to put two big threes to give the Lancers momentum early in the action. Senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) did great work on the block as well, working her player in the post. The Blue and Gold played solid  defense, allowing NEC to score minimal points of the course of the quarter. Worcester would go up 23-5 going into the second quarter.

In the second, the Pilgrim intensity picked up as NEC came out with some fighting spirit. Fortunately for Worcester, they had already established a sizable lead to offset the Pilgrim charge. A great quarter was played by sophomore Hannah Manzaro (West Brookfield, MA) who was able to put up three swift jump shots to help keep the momentum in favor of Worcester State. The Lancers would carry the lead at the end of the half 30-15.

The third was all about Worcester as they were able to reopen up the lead to 21 points behind Haynes and sophomore Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) who both played great offense but even better defense. Lomonaco was able to hit two quick shots off fast breaks created by Haynes during the stretch to help extend the lead. Worcester State would carry a 48-33 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth was a much more balanced attack on both ends of the court  as the Pilgrims were able to get the lead to just eight after going on a 6 point run partnered with solid defense to hold Worcester's scoring in check. While New England College would attempt the late surge comeback, Worcester would hold off their bid to claim the 60-48 victory on the day.

Hurynowicz would have a dominant performance on the day with a double double made up of 23 points and 11 rebounds.
