Baseball Falls to Dean, 6-5

BRIDGEWATER, MASS. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team dropped its third straight game on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The Bears fell behind, 6-1, and were unable to overcome the deficit, falling to Dean College, 6-5.

BSU is now 9-10 after the non-conference defeat while the Bulldogs improved to 4-15.

The Bears resume the schedule Friday by hosting Fitchburg State University at 3:30 p.m. and will travel to Fitchburg State for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Dean will host Framingham State University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Winning pitcher Danny Goyette (Holliston, Mass.) worked the third inning and earned his first decision. Goyette was the third of nine pitchers used by Dean.

Matt Kustigian (Charlton, Mass.) took the loss, allowing three runs in one inning. The Bears used seven pitchers, including starter Shane Handrahan (Raynham, Mass.), who struck out three and gave up two hits in three scoreless innings.

The Bears had eight hits with Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Mathew Pigeon (Canton, Mass.) getting two each.

Dean's eight-hit attack was led by Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.), Spencer Lichstrahl (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Colin Favata (Syosset, N.Y.) with two apiece.

The Bulldogs took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning, getting only three hits and sending nine batters to the plate.

Kyle Lancaster (Dartmouth, Mass.) led with a single to right and moved to third when Lichstrahl singled to left and Nathan Suncar (Boston, Mass.) walked.

Favata singled to left to score Lancaster and Lichstrahl.

Ryan Secovich (Southwick, Mass.) reached first on a wild pitch after striking out, allowing Suncar to score. Favata made it 4-0 when he scored on a wild pitch and Secovich came home on a double steal with Gavin Goss (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.).

BSU's first run came in the bottom of the fourth as Lindsay singled to left-center, went to second on a wild pitch and scored with two outs on a single to left by DJ Prampin (Worcester, Mass.).

Dean upped the lead to 6-1 in the fifth as Lancaster led with a walk and scored on a double to deep center by Lichstrahl.

The Bears began chipping away with a two-run fifth with Kyle Suraci (Clinton, Conn.) drawing a walk and going to second on a single to left by Pigeon.

Three straight walks to Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.), Lindsay and Ryan Flaherty (Duxbury, Mass.) brought in two runs for a 6-3 game.

In the sixth, Prampin led with a walk, went to second on a flyout and scored on a two-out double to right by Pigeon.

The Bears' final run came in the seventh as Flaherty homered to left. The home run marked Flaherty's team-leading third of the season.

BSU got a two-run double by Suraci in the seventh and a two-out single by Lindsay in the ninth but were unable to get the tying run home.

Notes: Jay Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) notched his 40th career double. Wladkowski is second only to BSU Hall of Famer Steve Smith on the Bears' all-time list. Smith recorded 55 doubles from 2005 to 2008.
