Farland's Two Goals Lifts Field Hockey Past WCSU, 2-1

DANBURY, Conn. -- Freshman midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, MA) scored a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State College field hockey team to a 2-1 Little East Conference win over Western Connecticut State University this afternoon in Danbury, Connecticut.

Bridgewater State improves to 8-4 on the season and 6-2 in the Little East standings, while Western Connecticut drops to 3-11 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

The Bears raced out to a 1-0 lead when Farland deposited her fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior forward Nicole Henrique (Swansea, MA) just 2:20 into the game.

Farland gave the Bears a 2-0 lead when she and junior forward Bethany Bush (Littleton, MA) sprinted 30 yards untouched for a break-away goal with only 4:35 elapsed on the game clock.

Senior Meredith Stuart (Washington, CT) scored five minutes into the second half to cut WestConn's deficit in half.  Stuart netted her third goal of the season off a feed from Stephanie Szafran (Killingworth, CT). Szafran's set up came off a penalty corner in the 41st minute of play.

Junior Katie Weber (Arlington, MA) made seven saves to post her eighth win of the seasons between the pipes for Bridgewater State.  Freshman goalie Heather Stone (Valhalla, NY) turned aside four shots for the Colonials who outshot the visitors, 12-7.
