Baseball Holds Off Lasell, 10-8

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team held off visiting Lasell College, 10-8, on Thursday afternoon at cold and windy Alumni Park.

The Bears improve to 10-5 on the season with their second straight win, while the Lasers fall to 7-6. The two teams were meeting for the first time.

Junior rightfielder Jay Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) reached safely five times to pace the BSU offense. Wladkowski went 2-for-2 with a double, three walks, a stolen base, two runs and two RBI.

Senior catcher Mathew Pigeon (Canton, Mass.) and freshman designated hitter Nolan DeAndrade (Bridgewater, Mass.) also recorded multiple hits for the Bears. Junior left fielder Cam James (Ipswich, Mass.) came off the bench to single, walk and score two runs in two plate appearances.

Trailing 3-0, the Bears pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to knot the score. Wladkowski drove in a run with a base hit and came around to score on an RBI double by senior third baseman Joey Molis (Cumberland, R.I.). Junior pinch hitter Kyle Suraci (Clinton, Conn.) added an RBI ground out in the frame.

After the Lasers reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, the Bears' got one back on Wladkowski's RBI double in the home half of the sixth.

Senior centerfielder Sean Goudey (Weymouth, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the base loaded and junior shortstop Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) connected for a sacrifice fly to give Bridgewater State a 6-5 lead in the seventh.

A two-run single by Pigeon highlighted a four-run eighth inning as the Bears extended the lead to 10-5.

Lasell rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth and had the bases loaded with two outs. However, BSU graduate righthander Matt Josselyn (Hanson, Mass.) came on out of the bullpen and ended the game with a clutch strikeout.

Junior righthander Nathan Labonte (Raynham, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season in relief of BSU freshman starter Trey Yesu (Monson, Mass.). Josselyn recorded his first collegiate.

The Bears open Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play on Friday when they travel to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on the Trailblazers of MCLA at 11:00 AM.
