WESTFIELD, Mass — Peyton Richardson netted two goals as Vermont State Castleton bested the Westfield State Owls 5-0 in a non-conference field hockey game on Tuesday night.
Westfield State is now 3-5 on the season while Castleton improves to 5-3.
The Owls had a great scoring opportunity in the first quarter when Sadie Stauffer (Suffield, Conn.) put a shot on net that forced a save from Castleton goalkeeper Zoe Martin. This led to an Owls corner taken by Leah Pierce (Barnstable, Mass.) which led to a shot off target by Abby Clark (Uxbridge, Mass.).
Gwyn Vincent started the scoring efforts for the Spartans with an unassisted goal as she put one past the Owls defense. In the second quarter, The Spartans kept up the pressure with a goal midway through the second quarter from Emily Downing, assisted by Peyton Richardson. This was not the last we would hear from Richardson's five point game.
Richardson netted two in the third and Jess Smithson extended the Castleton lead to five in the 4th and the Owls could not come back.
Westfield had two shots on net from Annalise Lopes (Plymouth, Mass.) and Stauffer.
Owls goalkeeper Emma Gniadek (Worcester, Mass.), had ten saves on the day with six coming during the Castleton led third quarter.
Westfield State will be back in action at Alumni Field on Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m. as they face MASCAC opponent Fitchburg State.
Vermont State Castleton will head on the road to Thomas College in Maine on Saturday, September 28 at 6 p.m.
