Falcons Fall to Owls in Women’s Lacrosse

Reyes Makes 23 Saves in Loss

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-3 decision to the Owls of Westfield State University this afternoon in non-conference action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Westfield State took a commanding 7-1 lead after 30 minutes, on scores from seven different players. Junior Victoria Paras (Medford, Mass.) and first year Kiely Hafensteiner (Niskayuna, NY) each notched their first goal of the season.  Junior Madison Alves (Braintree, Mass) potted her eighth goal of the 2021 campaign just before intermission for the Green and Gold.

Just three minutes into the second half sophomore Gabrielle Scibilia (Haverhill, Mass.) scored off a pass from classmate Eva Kozikowski (Portsmouth, NH) to cut the Owls advantage to 8-2. The visitors answered with three straight before a goal from senior Nicole Kopacz (Tewksbury, Mass.) made the score 11-3. 

Westfield closed out the game on a 5-0 run including a pair from Cassidy Connolly (Woburn, Mass.) resulting in the 16-3 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Kopacz paced the Falcons with a goal, five groundballs, 3 draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Scibilia added a goal, a draw control and a caused turnover for the Green and Gold.
  • Paras and Connolly finished with three scores each for the Owls.
  • Francesca Reyes (Malden, Mass.) stopped 23 shots for Fitchburg State in the setback.
  • Lily Sears (Medway, Mass) and Kara Banagan (Niskayuna, NY) combined to make 4 saves for Westfield State in the victory.
