Volleyball Sweeps Mass. Maritime, 3-0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Junior right side hitter Becca Whalen (Plymouth, Mass.) recorded a season-high 14 kills to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University volleyball team to a 3-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Arena. The Bears won by set scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-16.

The Bears improve to 9-5 on the season and 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers fall to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Bridgewater State remains unbeaten against the Buccaneers as the Bears hold a 39-0 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1993.

Whalen posted a .478 hitting percentage to go along with three digs and an assisted block.  Junior libero Victoria Caiano (Acushnet, Mass.) added 16 digs, four assists and three aces for the Bears, while senior setter Savannah Quintal (Assonet, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with two kills, three aces, five digs and a match-best 21 assists, and freshman outside hitter Sarah Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) checked in with nine kills, one aces and a match-high 17 digs. Junior setter Bethany Votta (Cumberland, R.I.) contributed eight assists, one kill and three aces for the visitors.

Caiano's third ace of the evening marked the 100th of her career.

The Bears finished with 40 kills, a .264 hitting percentage, 64 digs and ten aces on the evening. The BSU defensive effort limited the Buccaneers to a .075 hitting percentage for the match.

Freshman middle hitter Shayla Narodowg (Wellington, Colo.) notched six kills and a pair of solo blocks to pace Maritime, while sophomore defensive specialist Marlo Stark (Groton, Conn.) tallied three kills and ten digs. Freshman setter Keira Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa.) added three kills, 15 assists and six digs for the Bucs.

Maritime finished with 23 kills, 50 digs and one ace with eight serving errors.

In upcoming action, the Bears host Wheaton College on Thursday evening at six, while the Buccaneers travel to Worcester State University on Friday night for a seven o'clock MASCAC match with the Lancers.
