Women's Basketball Defeats Bridgewater State

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game on Wednesday night, defeating Bridgewater State University 74-62 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at John P. Brissette Court.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 12-6 overall on the season and 4-2 in the MASCAC. The Bears drop to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Both teams struggled for offense in the first quarter, combining for just 17 points and shooting 17.9 percent from the floor. Bridgewater State held a narrow 10-7 lead, with Kylee Piche and Maggie Hester leading the way with four points apiece.

The second quarter was a completely different story, as the Lancers outscored the Bears 18-5 to take a 25-15 lead into the break. Four different Lancers scored four points in the quarter, led by junior Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.), who also pitched in three steals and two assists in the period.

Both offenses had it working in the third quarter, but a narrow 23-21 edge in the period saw the Lancers head to the fourth up 48-36. Piche and Worcester State freshman Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) each scored seven points to lead their respective teams.

The Bears were unable to cut into the lead in the final 10 minutes, as both teams scored 26 points in the fourth for the Lancers to secure a 74-62 win. Senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) took charge in the fourth with a game-high nine points to help the Lancers seal the deal.

Mosley finished as the contest's leading scorer with 19 points, while also grabbing six boards. Senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, while Gallella scored 13 points. Piche was Bridgewater's leading scorer with 12 points, while Hannah Dziadyk scored 10.

Worcester State will be off over the weekend, but will return to the court on Monday for a non-conference matchup with Nichols College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Bridgewater State will play again on Saturday, when the Bears make the trip MCLA.
