Worcester, MA- After a week since their last action and victory, the Worcester State Women's Ice Hockey team (6-5, 4-1) return to the ice with a trip to #3 seeded Amherst for an afternoon battle of skills.
Final
Worcester State: 0
Amherst: 4
How it Happened:
Worcester would hold a strong dominant defensive front against the third rank team in the country for a majority of the game, not conceding a goal until nearly 15 minutes into the opening period where junior Kelsey Czerniawski would record 17 saves in the opening 20 minutes of action and Worcester would only concede single penalty to the Mammoths. The second period continued in the same vein of the first with both teams putting quality shots on frame and their defense holding steady through the onslaughts. Amherst would tuck in a second goal and third with just under six minutes to go in the second to provide a bit of a cushion while Worcester remained aggressive on their attack and played nearly flawless team defense.
Over the course of the second period, Czerniawski recorded her 25th save of the game, which also marked her 1,000th career save in the cage. Worcester would hit another level in the third period as they looked to cut into Amherst lead and begin a late surge for the victory, but while the shots were flying for the Lancers the Amherst defense zoned out the crease to keep Worcester off the board. With the amped up attack, Worcester was left front footed, which Amherst was able to capitalize on for their fourth goal of the game late in the third period.
Czerniawski would end the day with 72 saves and a .947% save percentage while the Lancers played a stellar defensive game, conceding just two penalties.
What's Next:
