Lancers Fall to Engineers in Second Half Scoring Burst

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Soccer team (1-2, 0-0) hosts their home opener this afternoon as they welcome WPI to Coughlin Field for their own Battle of Worcester as they look to break even at .500 at the end of the day after grabbing their first win last tuesday over Little East power house Eastern Connecticut State.

Final

Worcester State: 3

WPI: 5

How it Happened:

The Lancers would strike early with first year Ava Chevalier, (Brimfield, MA) scoring the opening goal just two minutes in the game, WPI answered quickly with a team effort resulting in a shot and tip in play by the attacker of a well executed corner kick that saw Maeve Steckley take the send from Madisyn Bagby over sophomore Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA) . Both Worcester teams evenly battled in the remaining play of the first half, with the Lancer's goalie, Gumienny, having 4 total saves and continually keeping her team in the match. WPI took the lead with a goal by Reese Pszenny assisted off a play to the middle by Olivia Toolin. The Lancers went into the break down by one, looking to compile a plan for attack and come out with fire for the next 45.

The second half opened with a rally of shots from WPI, as the  sophomore goaltender and her defense battled for momentum of offensive play. It would take over 30 minutes into the second half for the next offensive wave to occur as the Engineers Mia Gilmore would send a shot into the cage from Pszenny. The scoring would not stop there as sophomore Ava Lemanski would grab a rebounded shot for Worcester's second goal and nearly two minutes later again grab a rebound off the WPI keeper to tie the game up at 3-3. As the game look to settle into a draw, WPI would use the final minutes to sneak in two further goals to claim the victory 5-3 over the Lancers.

Gumienny would end the night with 10 saves in the action while Lemanski led the team with four shot attempts.
