Panthers Claw Past Owls, 76-60

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Middlebury's Kira Waldman scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Middlebury to a 76-60 women's basketball win over Westfield State on Tuesday evening in Middlebury, Vt.

Westfield trailed 20-8 early, but then drilled three straight three pointers to trim the lead, eventually tying the game at 22-all.  The Owls used a big second quarter to climb back into the contest and trailed by just two points, 36-34 at the half.

The Owls went cold from behind the arc in the second half, connecting on just 1-13 three point attempts after halftime, and shot a dismal 3-20 from the floor in the final quarter, as the Panthers pulled away.

Westfield (3-1) did force 28 turnovers while committing just 11 themsleves, but Middlebury (2-0) used its size advantage to garner a massive 52-22 edge in rebounds in the game.

Middlebury's Maya Davis added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Betsey Knox added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Owls were led by 13 points and seven steals by Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.).  Lauren Legere (Bedford) added 10 points on 4-6 shooting from the floor.

Westfield State will next play on Friday, when they play Rhode Island College at 8:00 p.m. in Williamstown, Mass. in the Morin Memorial Tournament at Williams College.
