Women's Lacrosse Posts 19-10 Senior Day Win Over Fitchburg State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass.Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied four goals and four assists, and Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored a game-high five goals to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 19-10 Senior Day victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Fitchburg State University on Saturday afternoon at Mazzaferro Field.

The Bears improve to 5-9 on the season and 2-2 in the MASCAC while the Falcons fall to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Bridgewater State is 23-1 all-time versus the Falcons dating back to 2008.

Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.) added three goals and a game-best nine draw controls and four caused turnovers for the Bears, while Meredith Sylvia (South Dartmouth, Mass.) registered two goals and an assist and Melanie McClay (Plymouth, Mass.) potted a pair of goals.

Bridgewater also received a goal and an assist from Katherine Wrona (Belchertown, Mass.) as well as three assists from Katie Lamothe (Dartmouth, Mass.), a pair of helpers from Hannah Bowlby (Dalton, Mass.) and a goal apiece from Haley Wood (Middleboro, Mass.) and Katy Shaw (Centerville, Mass.). Both Wrona and Wood scored their first goal of the season. Wood was playing in her first game of the 2024 campaign.

The Bears held the Falcons off the scoreboard for the entire first quarter as goals by Gonsalves, McIntyre and Herrington staked the host to a 3-0 lead. Gonsalves' goal marked her 100th career point.

The second quarter was closely contested with Herrington potting a pair of goals for the Bears and Abaigael Doheny (Lunenburg, Mass.) scoring twice for the visitors. Bridgewater would take an 8-4 lead into the break.

A goal from Gonsalves and two by McIntyre to open the third quarter extended the BSU advantage to 11-4. The Falcons would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

Bridgewater finished with a 37-24 shot advantage for the game as well as a 21-12 edge in draw controls.

BSU netminder Laura Giovaniello (Walpole, Mass.) turned aside seven shots to pick up her fourth win of the season. Caitlin Persson (Worcester, Mass.) made nine saves between the pipes for the Falcons.

Doheny paced Fitchburg three goals. Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Noelle Kennedy (Walpole, Mass.) added two goals apiece for the Falcons while Nicole Orlowski (Ellington, Conn.) checked in with a goal and two assists to go along with five draw controls.

Prior to the start of the game, the Bears honored GiovanielloHerrington, Wood, Wrona and fellow senior Bridget Lane (Newburyport, Mass.).

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday evening. The Bears host MASCAC foe Salem State University at seven o'clock while the Falcons travel to Keene State College to take on the Owls at six.

Notes: Herrington now has 98 goals in her career.
