Lancers Grab Non-Conference Victory over Rhode Island College

Worcester, MA- After a massive conference victory at Framingham State the past weekend, the Worcester State Men's soccer team took a trip down to Rhode Island College for a mid-week non-conference matchup.

Final Score: Worcester State: 2  Rhode Island College: 1

The game started off at a rather slower pace than usual but both teams were able to create scoring opportunities that were unable to be converted into goals. That was until the 31st minute of the match when sophomore Wilber Garcia (Bilbao,Spain) converted a penalty kick to open the scoring for the Lancers. Worcester State would go into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

Despite being down at halftime, the hosts searched for an equalizer and found it 3 minutes into the second half of play with a goal from Tariq Adio (Providence,RI) with the assist from Jesus Guarcas (Providence,RI). Approximately 15 minutes after the equalizer, sophomore Brendan Lower ( Grafton,Mass) scored the eventual game-winner after a well placed launch long distance to go sailing past Rhode Island's keeper after a perfect seam pass from sophomore Taylor Gavaletz (Dudley, MA). The Anchormen continued to look for a second goal on the night but were unable to find it as the final minutes saw a rise in tension and intensity as the Lancers worked to secure hold onto the lead. Senior Andy Ramirez would nab a final attempt for his eight save of the game to secure the win for the Lancers.

With this win, the Lancers improved their record to (4-5-4,1-3-1) and will host Salem State in their next matchup Saturday at 12pm in what will be the team's Senior Day.
