Falcons Upended By Beacons At Cod Fish Bowl

Boston, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Beacons of UMass Boston this afternoon in first round action of the 57th annual Cod Fish Bowl Tournament at the Edward T. Barry Rink.

How It Happened

UMass Boston opened the scoring at the 10:26 mark of the first period as junior Evan Googins (Matawan, N.J.) collected a feed from senior Ryan Rowland (Manahawkin, N.J.) and put a shot inside the near post for his second goal of the year for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score at 1-1 roughly one minute later when senior Hunter Fortin (Westerville, Ohio) skated in on Beacons keeper Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) and deposited a shot into the left side of the net for his seventh marker on the season.

In the middle frame, the Beacons regained the lead at the 6:47 mark with junior Owen Bourdow (Saginaw, Mich.) finding the back of the net off an assist from Googins for his second score of the 2022 campaign for the 2-1 edge.

UMass Boston upped the lead to 3-1 with just over three minutes remaining in the stanza as senior Davis Browning (Dallas, Tex.) found Googins in front of the net, who slipped a shot inside the far post for his second goal on the afternoon.

In the third period of play, the hosts secured the victory when junior Corey Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) received a pass from junior Blake Coleman (Boston, Mass.) and lifted a shot into the upper left corner for his second marker on the season, resulting in the 4-1 final.
