Giguere Nets Game-Winner With Seconds Left
Westfield State sophomore Allie Giguere netted the game winning goal with 10 seconds left in regulation time, as the Owls edged UMaine-Farmington, 3-2, on the second day of the Caryl Newhof Field Hockey Classic at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State sophomore Allie Giguere netted the game winning goal with 10 seconds left in regulation time, as the Owls edged UMaine-Farmington, 3-2, on the second day of the Caryl Newhof Field Hockey Classic at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
With the win, the Owls even their record at 1-1 on the season, while UMF falls to 0-2.
Thet two teams battled all day. Westfield got on the scoreboard first with Shannon Roycroft's second goal of the season, but the Beavers tied the game at 1-1 on an Alex Bessey goal midway though the first half.
The Owls grabbed a 2-1 lead on Cheryl Latona's goal just over three minutes into the fourth quarter, bt Bessey tied the game with a goal five minutes later, setting the table for Giguere's late game heroics. She was named to the All-Tournament team.
Riley Goulet made five saves in goal to preserve the win for Westfield. The Owls held a 12-9 margin in shots, with both teams earning seven penalty corners in the game.
Westfield will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Simmons at Alumni Field at 7:00 p.m.
