Baseball Holds Off RIC, 6-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The visiting Bridgewater State University baseball team held off Rhode Island College, 6-5, on Thursday afternoon at Pontarelli Field. The game was halted after six innings due to darkness. The start of the contest was also delayed by 45 minutes due to rain.

The Bears improve to 8-3 on the season with the win, while the Anchormen fall to 9-6.

Senior first baseman Joey Molis (Cumberland, R.I.) went 3-for-3 with three doubles, a run and three RBI to lead the Bears' 12-hit attack. Freshman third baseman Riley Thornell (Wareham, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI, while junior shortstop Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled twice in three at bats and sophomore centerfielder DJ Prampin (Worcester, Mass.) was 1-for-2 at the plate with a home run, walk and two RBI.

Prampin walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

An RBI triple by Thornell followed by an RBI double by Molis extended the BSU lead to 3-0 in the third.

The Anchormen got on the board in the home half of the third with a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior third baseman Cal Parrillo (Greenville, R.I.).

A two-run double by Molis in the fifth made it a 5-1 Bridgewater State advantage.

RIC rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within one. Junior designated hitter Cole Podedworny (Wakefield, R.I.) walked with the bases loaded, while freshman pinch hitter Liam Flynn (Charlestown, R.I.) added an RBI ground out in the frame. The Anchormen also scored a run on a wild pitch.

Prampin belted his second home run of the season in the top of the sixth, a solo blast over the left field fence, to give the Bears a 6-4 lead.

An RBI single by Parrillo with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth cut the Anchormen deficit to 6-5. Junior right fielder Sean Helfrich (Saunderstown, R.I) followed with a single to load the bases with nobody out. BSU senior closer Tyler Dasilva-Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.), however, induced a 4-2-3 double play and then ended the game with a called strike three.

Parrillo (2-3, 2RBI), Helfrich (2-4, R) and Podedworny (2-2, BB, RBI) collected two hits apiece for RIC.

Sophomore lefthander Shane Handrahan (Raynham, Mass.) got the start on the mound for Bridgewater State and worked into the fourth inning. Handrahan allowed a run on three hits over 3 2/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore righthander Cameron Breault (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season as he gave up three runs on two hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Dasilva-Medeiros worked the sixth inning to record his third save of the 2023 campaign and 14th of his career. He is one save shy of the Bears' career mark of 15 set by Kevin O'Leary in 1996 and equaled by BSU Hall of Famer Fred Martin in 1998.

Senior righty Connor Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) suffered the loss on the bump for RIC. Davey (3-1) gave up five runs on nine hits over four innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Bears take on Emerson College in a doubleheader on Saturday at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. Game one of the twinbill is slated to get underway at noon.
