Westfield State Wins Opener, Advances to Saturday Championship Game
Westfield put five players in double figure scoring and used a second half rally to get past St. Joseph’s – Long Island in the opening game of the Rick Martin – Hampton Inn Tournament, 91-84 on Friday evening at the Woodward Center.

Westfield (1-0) will face Eastern Connecticut (1-0), an 89-65 winner over St. John Fisher (NY) College in the other first round game, in the championship game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
St. Joseph's will meet St. John Fisher in the consolation final at noon.
For the Owls, Westfield trailed 41-32 at the half after going 0-11 from three-point range in the first half. The Owls responded by getting to the hoop more in the second half and using their pressure defense to turn the tides late in the half.
Lid Moreland led Westfield with 18 points, and Angel Price-Espada, who missed much of the first half with foul trouble added 16. Eric Johnson grabbed nine rebounds for the Owls.
The Golden Eagles (0-1) were led by 33 points from Alec Tabada. Spencer Malloy added 16.
In the nightcap, Eastern Connecticut shot 55 percent from the floor for the game to hold the Cardinals at bay. Dominick Dao led the Warriors with 19 points, with Jaylin Hamblin adding 18. The Warriors forced 20 turnovers from St. John Fisher (0-1).
Fisher got 17 points from Eric Kegler, Connor Williams added 11 points and nine rebounds.
