Falcons Sweep Rams in Conference Twinbill

Cordeau, Donohue Blast Home Runs

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State baseball team swept the Rams of Framingham State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Friday afternoon taking game one 7-5 and the nightcap 7-4 at Riccards Field.

How It Happened – Game 1

Fitchburg grabbed a 3-0 margin in the bottom of the first as senior Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) smashed his second home run of the season over the left field fence.  Seniors Jackson Vail (Grafton, Mass.) and Johan Asencio (Clinton, Mass.) each delivered RBI hits in the frame.

With the bases loaded the Falcons doubled the lead in the bottom of the second. Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.) collected two RBI's with a single to center field, followed by a single from classmate Cameron Donahue (Methuen, Mass.) to push the lead to 6-0.

Trailing 7-2 in the top of the seventh inning the Rams would mount a comeback. After three straight walks to load the bases first-year Kevin Girardin (Littleton, Mass.) laced an RBI single to centerfield. A batter later Chris Iannetta (Watertown, Mass.) had a 2 RBI single up the middle to cut the gap to 7-5.  Senior Zachary May (Rochdale, Mass.) would strike out the last two batters for the final.

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Junior Matthew Ambrosino (Bradenton, Fla.) notched his second win of the season allowing 2 earned runs on eight hits, with 7 k's over six innings pitched.
  • Anthony Panza (Watertown, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams, allowing 6 runs in two innings of work.
  • Brad Keefe (Dracut, Mass.), Jaime Velez (Lowell, Mass.) and Pingitore each had two hits for the Green and Gold
  • Both Andrew Caulfield (Malden, Mass.) and Girardin had 2-for-3 games for Framingham.

How It Happened – Game 2

The Rams opened the scoring (1-0) early with an RBI double from Bobby Higgins (Barnstable, Mass.) in the top of the first frame.  Jackson Vail plated the equalizer for the Green and Gold with a ground out to third base.

Cameron Donahue would give the Falcons the 2-1 lead with a home run to deep centerfield.

Knotted at 2-2, the Falcons capitalized on an infield error from the Rams to push the lead to 5-3 after three full innings.

Framingham would close the gap (5-4) in the fourth, when Gilroy scored on a wild pitch.  However the hosts would counter with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 7-4. Brad Keefe singled through the right side scoring Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) and Velez scored on a wild pitch.

Senior Austin Alzate (Narragansett, RI) closed down the Rams bats the last two innings for the save.
