Lancers Take Hawks to 0-0 Tie

Lancers Take Hawks to 0-0 Tie

Worcester, MA- After an exciting home stretch last week the Worcester State Women's Soccer team (4-5-1, 1-2) remains at home for another week. Kicking off this week's action will see the Lancers take on the Roger Williams Hawks in an out of conference battle that will look to put the team at .500.

Final

Worcester State: 0

Roger Williams: 0

The game's first kick would go to the Hawks giving Roger Williams the ability to shake off some early rust. Despite this, the contest would start out even as both teams size up their opponents. The only discernible difference being time of possession, which would slightly favor the Hawks. The Lancers play "bend, don't break" defense, which would allow them to ward off any Hawk shot attempt. This mentality would coax the hawks into attacking with many players, which allowed the Lancers to make some deep runs into the opponents territory. Both teams looked to score before leaving the first half. There were many shot attempts by both teams but none would land true. The first half would end 0-0.

The second half would be more of the same with both teams looking to score but each meeting a force of will that was determined not to allow it. The Hawks and Lancers would both get free kick opportunities but were not able to capitalize on them. Worcester State would begin to take their foot off the gas offensively as the Hawks attacked them relentlessly going into the ladder stages of the second half but the Lancers defense held true, in part by number sophomore Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA). Gumienny would make eight saves to keep the contest tied, with three coming in the final minutes of action with the Hawks going full force to the cage. Worcester State defense was relentless in return though, and closed out the game to hold on for the 0-0 ending.
