Softball Wins Two to Open Season
Westfield State softball got off to a hot start to the season, winning a pair of games in Naples, Fla. on Saturday.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State softball got off to a hot start to the season, winning a pair of games in Naples, Fla. on Saturday.
Westfield defeated SUNY-Cobleskill 9-1 in the season opener, then came back a couple hours later to top the Rochester Institute of Technology 11-6.
In the opener, Westfield jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings and never looked back. Sarah Bingham went 2-4 with a double and two rbi. Sarah Hough and Abby Clark each drove in a pair of runs, and Clark and Kassidy Latour each had a pair of hits.
Westfield starter Katherine Canty (W, 1-0) tossed four innings of 1-hit ball while striking out six to earn the win.
In the nightcap, Westfield worked around a five-run top of the first inning for the Tigers. The Owls answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, including a 2-run double from starting pitcher Janna Jose. Westfield grabbed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third, the big blow a 2-rbi double by Rachel Brewer-Karimi.
Jose settled in in the circle after the bumpy first inning to earn the win. Angelina Vartuli worked three shutout innings of relief to earn the save.
Hough was 3-4 with four runs scored a pair of RBI. Mia Alfonso was 3-3 with two rbi, and Brewer-Karimi drove in three runs.
