Falcons Sweep Amcats In Non-Conference Action

Cahill and Moreau lead Green and Gold to pair of victories

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team registered a sweep over the Amcats of Anna Maria College this afternoon in non-conference action from the Donna Lee Withington Softball Field by the scores of 5-3 and 8-0.

How It Happened

Game One

Anna Maria broke a 0-0 stalemate in the top of the fourth when graduate student Ashley Garcia (Cornwell, N.Y.) singled to left and scored on a single from freshman Paige Stewart (Auburn, Mass.) and throwing miscue for the 1-0 margin.

Fitchburg State answered in the bottom half of the frame as senior Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.) singled, advanced to second on a Kiara Bigeau (Clinton, Mass.) single before senor Sarah Cahill (Mansfield, Mass.) laced a two-run double to left field, while sophomore Mackenzie Leveille (Brooklyn, Conn.) followed with an RBI single through the left side for the 3-1 edge.

The Falcons upped the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of fifth with senior Madison Mantegani (Bellingham, Mass.) drawing a leadoff walk, moving to second and third on a fielding miscue and base hit off the bat of Grass before sophomore Julia Gavin (Granby, Mass.) drove in Mantegani with a sacrifice fly

The Amcats responded in the top of the sixth when graduate student Michelle Ciley (Dracut, Mass.) and junior Eden Forget (Worcester, Mass.) reaching on fielding miscues, while Garcia ripped an RBI single to make the score 4-2.

The Green and Gold tacked on an insurance run in their half of the sixth as Leveille doubled to left field and crossed the plate on a groundout and throwing miscue for the 5-2 advantage. The visitors trimmed the deficit to 5-3 in the top the seventh with junior Saylor Costa (East Providence, R.I.) doubling to left and eventually scoring on an RBI single to right field, resulting in the 5-3, game one final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Cahill paced the Falcons, going 1-for-3 with a double, one run scored and two RBI
  • Leveille finished 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI for the Green and Gold
  • Cahill picked up the win for Fitchburg State, allowing three unearned runs on nine hits and five K's in the complete game effort
  • For the Amcats, Garcia hit 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI
  • Graduate student Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, Mass.) suffered the setback for Anna Maria, yielding five runs on eight hits and four strikeouts in six innings pitched

Game Two

Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when singled on a bunt, moved to third on a fielding miscue and scored on a ground out from Grass before junior Dana Cisowski (Torrington, Conn.) crossed the plate on a double steal attempt for the 2-0 edge.

The Falcons doubled the lead (4-0) in the bottom of the third as Mantegani and Cisowski singled before Manttegani crossed the plated on a fielding miscue, while Grass followed with an RBI double to right field, scoring Cisowski.

The Green and Gold pushed the advantage to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth with junior Lauren Kirkconnell (Dayville, Conn.) drawing a leadoff walk, moving to second on sacrifice bunt, while scoring on an RBI groundout by classmate Allison Pogorek (Millbury, Mass.).

Fitchburg State upped the margin in the following stanza when Cisowski singled up the middle, advanced to second on a Grass walk before Cisowski came home on an RBI single from sophomore Isabella Sousa (Charlton, Mass.), while Grass crossed the plate on a single by Kirkconnell to make the score 7-0.

The hosts capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as Pogorek reached on fielding error, moved to second on single through the left side by sophomore Alyssa Beaulieu (Derry, N.H.) and scored as Cisowksi connected on an RBI double to left, resulting in the 80, game two final.
